Styling your home with indoor plants isn’t a new idea. Potted houseplants have been found in homes dating back to ancient civilizations, for a good reason. Plants can make a room feel more calming, peaceful, and above all welcoming.

With many of us adding workspaces to our living rooms (or basements) and classrooms in kitchens, making your environment a less stressful is incredibly important.

Styling with plants is not a definitive science. There’s no rule about what goes where, but there are definitely a few helpful guidelines that can make the process a little less overwhelming. Today, we are sharing how to style plants in your home.

How to Style Plants Indoors - easy Houseplants for Beginners

Before choosing your plants, it pays to do some research, even if it is just going on Pinterest and looking at polished photos of indoor plants. This will help you narrow down the look and feel that you want to bring into your home and create with plants.

Once you’re clear with your preferences, we recommend looking at the suitability of those plants in your home. Do they need a lot of light, watering, attention? Where will they go in your home?

By figuring out the measurements and look that you want to construct, you are not only making it easy before heading to the store, but you are going to create a look you love.

A Few Important Rules to Keep In Mind

There are a few simple principles when it comes to styling with plants that you’ll come across again and again. Once you get the hang of them, they become second nature and the whole process gets easier. Practice really does make perfect, so don’t be afraid to have a go!

Pay Attention to Size

Once again, we’re looking for playful interest and variety. If you have a large or oversized plant, you usually want to pair them with smaller plants. Large plants and trees are great for bare corners and awkward transitions between furniture too!

We also like to use this design principle of grouping plants in uneven numbers. Even numbers of plants can give off the look of being too balanced and uptight.

Choose Your Pots and Accessories for your Plants Carefully

The pots contribute almost as much style to a room as the plants growing (or pretending to grow) in them! So don’t overlook your planters. Look for modern shapes and patterns that fit your unique style.

If you want to create a styling ‘vibe’ with your plants (i.e. ‘boho’ or ‘coastal’) choose specimens that are from that are synonymous with that ‘look’. This is where your research will come in handy! We love these vases and pots from our Shop.

Different Heights

Tiered plants look better than all the one height. Placing them at different heights creates visual interest and can make the space more appealing. If your plants are all the same height you can create that difference with plant stands.

Most importantly have fun with it. From coffee tables to bookshelves, there are numerous ways you can add plants to your home!
